One Room Challenge: Spring 2022 Week 7

Hello and welcome to the blog! We are in the 7th week of the Spring 2022 One Room Challenge, just one week away from the end! This week I worked on a whole bunch of random things trying to make progress where I could. Let’s run through what I’ve been working on and what I still need to do before the big reveal.

Atrium

I started off the week making more flagstone pavers. I needed 2 more sets to fill out the space in the atrium. Once they were all made, I laid them out the way I wanted them and started to level them. If you missed how I’m making my pavers, read about it here.

Last weekend we bought a truck-bed full of composted soil from a local company to fill our garden beds. I’ve never done this before, but it was so much cheaper than buying it at big box stores! We only paid $20 for about 1 cubic yard of soil (enough to fill up a standard truck-bed). That’s a lot of dirt! I would have paid $200+ for the soil and compost at any big box store in my area. It was a workout unloading the soil from the truck into the wheelbarrow, then wheeling it to our atrium and unloading it. My Fiancé was a huge help with this part of the project. We worked as a team to make it easier for both of us; he loaded the wheelbarrow and brought it to the atrium, then I filled the garden beds. I definitely wouldn’t want to do this by myself; that wheelbarrow got heavy!

Still to do in the atrium:

  • Finish leveling the flagstone pavers

  • Add ground cover plants between the flagstone pavers

  • Add perlite and mulch to garden beds

  • Plant vegetables in garden beds (there’s not much you can grow in Florida summers, so it may be a little bare for now)

  • Clean and decorate

  • Seal concrete floors

Lounge/pass-through area

Grinding the concrete floor

The concrete floor in the lounge/pass-through area had old mortar and glue on its surface, making the floor look bad. So I started grinding it down with an angle grinder, and I got it down to bare concrete. It looks so good! But it is taking forever, and it is SO dusty, even with dust collection set up. I spent about 9 hours this week grinding the floor, and I’m only about halfway done.

Still to do in the lounge/pass-through area:

  • Finish grinding the floors

  • Clean everything

  • Touch up paint

  • Upcycle furniture

  • Decorate

  • Seal concrete floors

  • Upgrade pass-through countertop (if I have time)

Workout area

Still to do in the workout area:

  • Move everything that is currently stored on the deck

  • Clean

  • Set up workout equipment

  • DIY storage

  • DIY curtains

  • Decorate

Whew, it has been a long 7 weeks, and there is still so much to do. Admittedly, most of these projects have taken me way longer than I thought. But I am getting them done! We’ll see what I end up finishing in time for next week. Thanks for following along! Be sure to check out the other participants of the One Room Challenge over on the ORC blog.
