One Room Challenge: Spring 2022 Week 3

Hello and welcome to the blog!

It’s week 3 of the One Room Challenge already; here we go! This week I worked on some much-needed screen enclosure maintenance. In the past, I have patched a few small holes in the screen, but I have never done anything else. So let’s get into what I wanted to get done this week.

To-do:

  • Sand aluminum enclosure

  • Clean screens and aluminum enclosure

  • Mask off screens

  • Prime aluminum enclosure

  • Paint aluminum enclosure

  • Patch small holes in the screen

  • Replace screen panels that can’t be patched

Before

The aluminum screen enclosure was not looking its best. The color was faded, and the paint was peeling in certain areas. So I decided to paint it to give it a refresh. In preparation for paint, I sanded the screen enclosure to remove any loose paint and scuff up the surface so the primer would bind better.

After sanding, I cleaned the enclosure and the screens with soap and water. The screens really needed to be cleaned; they had pollen all over them! I doesn’t show up well in pictures, but the view looking out the screens is much clearer now!

Next, I masked off the screens using painter’s tape and masking paper. This took 6 rolls of tape! I was shocked. I did try not masking off the screens and just using a spray shield, but that didn’t go well, so masking was necessary.

For primer, I used the aluminum primer by Rust-Oleum with a paint sprayer accessory that turns aerosol spray paint cans into a spray gun. I really liked this accessory; I will definitely use it for future projects! Next, I used High Performance Enamel Flat Black Spray Paint by Rust-Oleum for the paint. My screen enclosure is pretty large; I used 7 cans of primer and topcoat each!

After

I underestimated the amount of time, tape, and paint that this project would take. I had many trips to The Home Depot this week, lol. I did not get to repair the small holes in the screen or replace the damaged screen panels. But those are tasks that I can work on whenever I have a little spare time over the next few weeks.

The schedule I made in the first week of ORC has worked well so far, but I may need to change a few things for the upcoming weeks. This back patio is a big project, and today I ran into an issue with my plan for the concrete flooring, so I need to regroup.

Thank you for following along! Be sure to follow me on Instagram and if you have time, check out some of the other projects being done on the ORC blog.
