One Room Challenge: Week 6 - Plan A Doesn’t Always Work Out

Hello and welcome to the blog!

It’s week 6 of ORC, and my progress this week is less than exciting. If you’re still going to read on, you’re the real MVP!

My plan for this week was to make the floating shelves and get them mounted to the wall. This is my first time attempting floating shelves, so that was a pretty tall order to begin with. I wanted to follow this tutorial, where you use dowels and part of the shelf as the “bracket”. It seemed like an innovative way to make floating shelves, and I would save money by not buying floating shelf brackets (which can be pricey). Long story short, this method did not work for me; it took a long time to finish just one shelf, and it didn’t look as seamless as I wanted.

Layout for the floating shelves.

I spent most of my day Saturday finding the studs in my wall and finalizing the spacing I wanted for the shelves, a vital part of the process.

Plan B for the shelves was to buy the floating shelf brackets ($$$). The brackets arrived last night, and I’m really hoping they work. I will keep you posted.

There are a few projects that I have been too busy to finish, so I shifted focus to those for this week. I finished upholstering the dining chairs and put them all back together. It’s nice to have more than one chair to use again! Today after work, I will be painting the tile grout in the dining room, which I am excited to do because it is so simple and makes a huge difference.

Even though this week had some setbacks, it felt good to catch up on what I needed to finish. For me, the challenging part of ORC is staying on track with the project, with all the other responsibilities of life still needing attention. My main goal is to have this dining room completed in 2 weeks, by the deadline.

Next week’s blog post is supposed to be going over everything needed to finish the space, but I don’t want to give the whole room away before the reveal, so TBD on what I will show next week. Thanks for reading!
