One Room Challenge: Week 3 - Drywall Repair

Untitled design.png

Hey! Welcome to the blog!

It is week 3 of the Fall 2021 One Room Challenge! The dining room has come a long way since I started, but there is still a lot to do! Let’s take a look at what the dining room looked like a few weeks ago.

This week was all about drywall repair, a not-so-fun but necessary part of the process. I needed to fill holes left by drywall anchors, cover old telephone and cable boxes, and fill in the gap left by removing the chair rail. Let’s get into it.

Supplies:

  • Joint compound

  • Putty knife

  • Taping knife

  • Mud pan

  • Sanding block

  • Drywall repair patch

I used a putty knife and joint compound to fill in the holes left by drywall anchors.

After the joint compound was dry, I sanded it smooth and assessed if it needed another coat.

Most of the holes needed 2 coats since the holes were on the larger side.

I got the idea to cover the telephone and cable boxes from my husband and loosely followed this tutorial.

I used a 6’’ x 6’’ drywall self-adhesive wall repair patch. A 4’’ x 4’’ patch would work as well.

I peeled the backing off the patch, pressed the patch onto the wall, and then covered the patch with joint compound. After the joint compound dried, I sanded it smooth and repeated the joint compound and sanding steps one more time.

I needed to fill in the area that was previously covered by the chair rail so the whole wall would be smooth.

I previously did this in my small hallway makeover and will be continuing with it in the rest of the house.

I used a 10’’ taping knife and joint compound to fill in the gap. All of the walls needed two coats with sanding in between. A few spots needed a third coat as a touch-up.

As I sanded, I ran my hand up and down the wall feeling for any high or low spots. I sanded or added more joint compound as needed. If the wall is not completely smooth when I paint, it will show through.

We will see if I did a good enough job when I paint in a few weeks, fingers crossed!

And just like that . . . drywall repair is done!

That’s all for week 3 of ORC! The other participants of this challenge are putting together great rooms; go check them out.
