Cozy Mushroom Footstool Tutorial

Inspiration

I came across the inspo for this project while looking for ideas on how to set up my desk area. A cute little mushroom ottoman! I immediately knew that I needed something like this under my desk, but they were too expensive for my taste and not the size I needed. So, I decided to make one! Check out the tutorial below to see how I made a mushroom footstool for my office!

Supplies:

Supplies for building mushroom base.

Supplies for upholstering mushroom top.

  • 12” diameter wood round 1/4” thick

  • 8” planter

  • Hex bolt 1/4” 2.5” long

  • (3) fender washers 1/4”

  • (3) hex nuts 1/4”

  • Super glue

  • 13” Round pillow

  • Batting (or spare fabric)

  • Fabric of your choice

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil

  • Drill

  • 1/4” drill bit

  • Scissors

  • Staple gun

  • 1/4” staples

Tutorial

Step 1

The wood round will be the top of the mushroom. Find the center of the wood round and mark it with a pencil, then drill a 1/4” hole.

Step 2

The planter will be the base of the mushroom. Measure the bottom of the planter to find the center, then drill a 1/4” hole.

Step 3

Place a washer and a 1/4” 2.5” long hex bolt through the wood round. Then place another washer and a nut on the other side of the wood round. This will be the mushroom top assembly.

Step 4

Place the mushroom top assembly on top of the base, with the bolt going through the hole in the base. Place a washer and a nut on the inside of the base to hold everything together.

  • Make sure everything fits together well. The holes in the pot may need to be made larger to accommodate the nut on the mushroom top assembly. Make any necessary adjustments.

Step 5

Remove the mushroom top from the base, then use super glue to permanently attach the washers to the wood top, and the bolt to the washer. Allow the super glue to dry before tightening the nut on the top assembly as much as possible.

  • This will keep the bolt from moving when it is attached to the base later on (after adding the pillow to the top of the wood the top of the bolt will be inaccessible).

Step 6

Place the pillow on top of the mushroom top assembly. Measure how much batting will be needed to cover the wood top and the pillow, then cut the batting to size.

Step 7

Attach the batting to the wood top with a staple gun and 1/4” staples, pulling the batting tight while stapling. Trim any extra batting away.

Step 8

Measure how much fabric will be needed to cover the wood/pillow top, then cut the fabric to size.

Step 9

Attach the fabric to the wood top with a staple gun and 1/4” staples, pulling the fabric tight while stapling. Trim any extra fabric away.

Step 10

Put the mushroom top on the base, with the bolt from the top going through the hole in the base. Place a washer and a nut on the bolt and tighten. A second nut can be added to make the bolt more secure if needed.

Note: My original inspiration for this project had the base of the mushroom covered in fabric as well, but I loved the look of the base without fabric so I didn’t add it. Fabric can easily be added to the base with some hot glue or staples if that is the look you want!
