How to Make Grout Look Like New

Left: Grout refresh; Right: Stained grout

One of the most frustrating areas to keep stain free is grout lines. Even when the grout says it wont stain, it’s not true! White grout is the number 1 offender of this, but it can happen with any grout color. Luckily, there is a way to bring the grout back to looking like new, Mapei Grout Refresh paint. I’ve used this product twice, once to change a grout color completely, and most recently to make our white grout look like new. Check out how to update your grout below!

Supplies:

  • Mapei Grout Refresh

  • Krud Kutter

  • Grout Brush

  • Small paintbrush or toothbrush

  • Paper towels

Tutorial:

  1. Scrub the grout thoroughly with a Grout Brush and Krud Kutter (or similar cleaning product).

  2. Wipe off all cleaning product with a paper towel.

  3. Wipe the whole area with a wet paper towel, then dry off.

  4. Apply Mapei Grout Refresh to the grout lines, keep the working area small so you have enough time to work with the paint before it dries.

  5. Spread the paint over the grout lines evenly using a small paintbrush or a toothbrush.

  6. Follow manufacturer instructions for how long to let the paint sit:

    • Let the paint sit on the grout for 5 minutes or less and wipe excess paint off the tile with a dry paper towel (in the direction of the grout).

    • Let the paint sit on the grout for 20-25 minutes, then wipe excess paint off the tile with a wet paper towel (in the direction of the grout), avoiding the grout.

  7. Avoid traffic for 2 hours and water for 24 hours.

  8. After the grout is completely dry, clean the area around the tile with a wet paper towel to ensure all excess paint is removed from the tile.
